Biography

Childhood and Studies

Born in New York in March 1967.

She studied Economics at Bryn Mawr College (B.A. degree) in the U.S.A., in the state of Pennsylvania, and Law, with a specialization in International Legal Relations, at Cornell University (J.D. degree) in New York State. She also studied at the London School of Economics in the U.K., at the Law School of the University of Madrid in Spain, and at the Institut d ‘Etudes Françaises d’ Avignon in France.

Professional Activities

Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou worked for several years as a lawyer in New York, specializing in financial transactions and international banking law. She is still a member of the New York Bar Association.

In the early 1990’s, she returned to Greece and became the Director of the EGNATIA EPIRUS Foundation, a non-profit organization established in the city of Ioannina, whose goal is to promote the integrated development of the region of Epirus through innovative activities compatible with the environment and the cultural heritage of the region. Since 1997, she has also worked as an evaluator and reviewer of projects funded by the European Commission and as a consultant in the private sector in Brussels and Luxembourg.

Political and Parliamentary Activities

She was elected a member of the Municipal Council of the City of Ioannina, where she served from 2007 to 2012, and was appointed Municipal Spokesperson of the Municipal Council of the City of Ioannina. She was also Vice-President of the Municipal Regional Theatre of Ioannina from 2007 to 2009, and Deputy Mayor of Ioannina, responsible for European Programmes from 2010 to 2012.

In the national elections of June 2012, she ran for parliament with the New Democracy Party and was elected MP in the electoral district of the Prefecture of Ioannina, the first woman MP ever to be elected in this district. She was appointed Spokesperson of the New Democracy Party in 2013 by Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister and President of the New Democracy Party, and she also served as Head of the Political Ideology Committee at the 9th Congress of New Democracy.

In the national elections of January 2015 and September 2015 respectively, she was elected MP in the 2nd (B) electoral district of Athens. She served as Head of the Fiscal Policy Sector for New Democracy in 2015, Head of the Development and Competition Sector for New Democracy in 2016, and has been Head of the Digital Policy, Telecommunications & Media sector since November 2016.
